PSHE/Mental Health

At Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, we recognise the importance of promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing to our pupils and their families. We aim to create an open culture around the discussion of mental health and wellbeing and to empower our children be able to regulate their emotions. By making use of the Zones of Regulation curriculum we aim to teach our pupils to identify emotions in themselves and others and provide them with bank of strategies to help regulate their emotions and improve their wellbeing.

The Zones of Regulation is a range of activities to help your child develop skills in the area of self-regulation. Self-regulation can go by many names, such as self-control, self-management and impulse control. It is defined as the best state of alertness of both the body and emotions for the specific situation. For example, when your child plays in a basketball game, it is beneficial to have a higher state of alertness. However, that same state would not be appropriate in the library.

The Zones of Regulation is based around the use of four colours to help children self-identify how they’re feeling and categorise it based on colour. This helps children better understand their emotions, sensory needs and thinking patterns. The children learn different strategies to cope and manage their emotions based on which colour zone they’re in.

Additionally, the Zones of Regulation help children to recognise their own triggers, learn to read facial expressions, develop problem-solving skills, and become more attuned to how their actions affect other people.

As we begin a new school year, the whole community came together to reflect on our Mission - Living, Loving, Learning - Christ at the Centre - and what it means to live this out each day.
At the heart of our school community are the OLQM Values and Characteristics, rooted in our Catholic faith and brought to life through Catholic Social Teaching.
The morning started with a Stay and Pray and parents and members of our community joined each year group in creative prayer and music.
The children then reflected further on our Mission and their thoughts, hopes and reflections were shared together. We thought about how each of us can put our faith into action, following in the footsteps of Jesus.
Every child and member of the staff team added their fingerprint to the Mission Trees as a promise to try their best each day and to live out the Mission in all that we do.
Our Mission isn’t simply something we talk about, it is something we live. 🙏 ❤ ✝

Last week in their science lesson, Year 2 St John headed outside to become plant detectives, exploring our school grounds to identify different wild plants and investigate where they grow.

The children enjoyed recording their discoveries and deciding whether the plants they found were weeds or not.
