Values and Characteristics at OLQM

At Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Primary School, everything we do is rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ . As it is written in Matthew’s Gospel, we want our pupils to shine brightly, living out the Gospel values in all they do.

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden… Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5: 14-16)

Our School Values

Our school values are drawn from the Beatitudes and underpin our house point system. They are the foundation of how we learn, work, and live together as a community of faith. Each value helps our children to understand what it means to follow Christ and to grow in love, compassion and service.

  • Faithfulness and Integrity – We stay true to our faith, keeping our promises and living honestly, even when it is difficult.

  • Dignity and Compassion – We treat every person as made in the image of God, showing kindness and empathy to those in need.

  • Humility and Gentleness – We recognise our gifts with gratitude and use them quietly and kindly for the good of others.

  • Truth and Justice – We stand up for what is right and fair, seeking the truth and promoting justice in our world.

  • Forgiveness and Mercy – We forgive as Jesus forgives us, showing understanding, patience and love to others.

  • Purity and Holiness – We keep our hearts open to God, striving to make good choices and live holy lives.

  • Tolerance and Peace – We value difference, seek harmony, and work together to build a peaceful community.

  • Service and Sacrifice – We follow Jesus’ example of serving others, putting others before ourselves and giving generously of our time and talents.

These values are recognised daily through our house point system, and celebrated at the end of the week in our end of the week Celebration of the Word, with one child per class being awarded a certificate based on demonstrating these values or characteristics during the week.

OLQM’s Characteristics

As pupils journey through our school, we want them to grow into confident, compassionate and capable individuals. Our hope is that by the time each child leaves our school , they can be:

  • LEADERS OF TOMORROW, making a difference to their community and the world today.
    Children who take responsibility, show initiative and inspire others through service and example.

  • ADVOCATES for those around them, those in need and those who cannot stand up for themselves.
    Children who show courage, empathy and justice in defending what is right.

  • POWERFUL ORATORS to the world on the issues that matter to them.
    Children who communicate confidently, thoughtfully and respectfully about the things that are important to them and to their faith.

  • GOSPEL ACTIVISTS growing Gospel values in their community, within and beyond the life of the school.
    Children who live out the teachings of Jesus through actions that bring hope, love and change to others.

  • INQUISITVE LEARNERS who have a life-long thirst for acquiring new knowledge and skills.
    Children who are curious, questioning and eager to understand more about the world God created.

  • CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVERS who can respond and adapt to a changing world.
    Children who use imagination, reason and reflection to overcome challenges and shape a better future.

  • INCLUSIVE TEAM BUILDERS who recognise, respect and value difference.
    Children who celebrate diversity, work together and build community in the spirit of Christ’s love.

Living Our Values Every Day

Our values and characteristics are not confined to displays or assemblies — they are interwoven through every aspect of school life. They shape our curriculum, guide pupils in their leadership opportunities, and influence how we play, pray, and learn together.

We see them lived out:

  • in our curriculum, where Gospel values guide our learning and enquiry;

  • in leadership opportunities, where pupils serve their school and wider community;

  • in prayer and liturgy, where children reflect, worship and grow in faith;

  • in playtimes and lunchtimes, where kindness, respect and cooperation shine;

  • and in relationships, where each child learns to value and care for one another as part of God’s family.

By the time our children leave Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, we want them to be young people of faith, hope and love — ready to LEAD, STAND, SPEAK, ACT, ASK, THINK and SHARE as disciples of Christ in the world.
