Our aim is to enable children to become able and confident mathematicians who are well equipped to use maths in life and the real world. Children should be:
- Fluent in all of the basic concepts;
- Able to use their skills to develop and follow different lines of enquiry within mathematics;
- Able to apply their knowledge confidently in a wide range of contexts and to solve a range of problems.
The key skills and concepts they learn are broadly outlined under the headings of Number, Place Value, Calculating, Fractions, Measurement, Geometry and Problem Solving. We recognise that frequent practice of key skills within number will enable children to access the other areas of the curriculum in more depth.
Within school, we endeavour to make maths for children as meaningful and exciting as possible using real life application and context whenever we can. Our careful use of questioning within the classroom, challenge tasks, and assessment enables us to make sure all children are challenged and supported at a suitable level in order to reach their full potential.
As a school, we use the White Rose Maths scheme to ensure coverage of the maths curriculum. This is carefully segmented into units across the year, although these occasionally be moved at the discretion of the teacher. White Rose encourages the use of concrete resources to facilitate understanding of the mathematical concepts, and all classes have a carefully selected supply of resources for pupils to use. We are in the process of producing an up to date calculation policy which ensures the inclusion of all approaches to mathematical learning (Concrete Pictorial and Abstract), and this will be shared with parents when it is ready.
Careful questioning is used in KS1 to assess a starting point for each unit, and in KS2, pre and post unit assessments are carried out on chrome-books using a website called maths.co.uk.
At the end of each term, children undertake a maths assessment using the PUMA assessment scheme (https://www.risingstars-uk.com/subjects/assessment/rising-stars-puma). These help to keep teachers informed of each child’s progress and ability to retain concepts taught in class.
To ensure that children’s learning continues to develop further, we ask that they should make use of frequent opportunity to practise their skills at home through TT Rock Stars, Numbots, games, discussion and practical application. If you look on your child’s class page, there should be plenty of suggestions for websites to use, as well as the ones listed below.
